Chaffee County Habitat for Humanity Joins in Celebrating World Habitat Day

Chaffee County (October 5, 2020)– October 5th marks World Habitat Day for Habitat for Humanity affiliates worldwide. Chaffee County Habitat for Humanity (CCHfH) is joining the celebration to raise awareness for affordable housing issues in Chaffee County.

On World Habitat Day, Habitat for Humanity International joins the United Nations and other organizations in educating, raising awareness and mobilizing individuals and communities to take action on the global housing crisis. Chaffee County Habitat joins this fight by having informational tables on October 5th at City Market in Buena Vista from 11:00 AM-1:00 PM and Walmart in Salida from 3:00-5:00 PM. CCHfH is also holding a snack drive to provide snacks for volunteers on the worksite. Snacks must be individually wrapped/non-perishable and can be dropped off at the informational tables or the ReStore. These events are aimed to reach people in the community and raise awareness about affordable housing and Habitat in Chaffee County.

World Habitat Day is an annual event that draws attention to the role affordable housing plays in removing barriers to opportunity, success and health that affect families worldwide. This fact is no different in Chaffee County where 50% of renters (and 13% of homeowners) spend more than 30% of their income on housing, according to a 2018 Census Survey. This means that 63% of Chaffee County residents are housing cost-burdened. Spending this amount of money on housing means that paying for satisfactory food, healthcare, transportation and other necessities is not possible. CCHfH partners with families to lower this cost and make affordable housing a possibility.

You can help Chaffee County Habitat for Humanity celebrate by signing up to volunteer, donating to the ReStore, or making a monetary donation. If you would like to get involved with CCHfH, email coordinator@chaffeehabitat.org or call (719) 395-0482. Celebrate World Habitat Day by doing what you can to ensure everyone in Chaffee County has a safe, decent, affordable place to live.
