Fairplay Senior Center

Having been unable to find land to build on this season, Habitat got creative and found some smaller projects where the community needed help, including the Fairplay Senior Center, Buena Vista Little APES (Avery Parsons Early School), and Salida School District’s Spartan Heights Subdivision.

Our work at the South Park Senior Center in Fairplay involved helping them complete a 900 square foot extension to their facility.  On the exterior, we installed siding, roofing, and a covered porch.  Interior work included insulation, drywall, taping/texturing and painting.  Overall these tasks took nine weeks and were completed on the 10th of July.  During half of this time, the Weston Pass Fire caused the volunteers to drive through Hartsel to get to the build site.  Overall this was a great project that helped a fellow nonprofit from an area that supports CCHfH.

Little APES Playhouses

After completing the Senior Center, we switched gears to help the Little APES in Buena Vista. They asked us to build a playhouse and play tool shop for the preschoolers. So for the past four weeks, we have been building the playhouse, featuring a fireplace with a reading area and a tunnel for the kids to climb through, and shop, standing at a whopping 6 feet tall, in the yard at the Restore. Both are nearly complete, waiting to be assembled on site. We were able to find an abundance of furnishings/accessories throughout the Restore to really give the kids a realistic feeling house & shop, and can’t wait to see it all come together.

Spartan Heights Duplex

Our next project was completing a duplex in Spartan Heights. Spartan Heights is a project in Poncha Springs that the Salida School District started in 2016, where a group of high schoolers has been building affordable duplexes for teacher housing with their shop teacher. While the students have done an excellent job, they needed some help to get their first duplex wrapped up. Diesslin Structures, Inc. (DSI) stepped in to help the project a couple months ago and is handing it off to Habitat after drywall is finished to see the project through completion. The project was completed mid-November it’s ready to hand off to the first two families.
