Frequently Asked Questions

Q.   Does Habitat give away houses?
A.   No, we help people buy their home.

Q.   Does Habitat rent any houses?
A.   No.

Q.   Why is a Habitat home affordable?
1.  We do not require a down payment.
2.  We can do a no or low interest loan.
3.  The majority of labor costs are free because homes are built by volunteers and the new homeowner.

Q.   How do I know if I can qualify for a Habitat home?

Q.   How do I apply?
1.  Fill out and then turn in a HOUSING INTEREST FORM or call our office at 395-0482.
2.  Meet with the Family Selection Committee.

  • Fill out and turn in all the application paperwork and accompanying financial and personal paperwork such as pay check stubs, income tax information, etc.
  • Conduct a home visit from the Family Selection Committee.
  • Volunteer 6 hours in the community.

Q.   When can I apply?
A.    Anytime!  The application process will take about 4 months. You need to apply in the summer or fall to qualify for the home to be built the following summer.

Q.    If I am chosen, what will I have to do?

Q.   What if I am not physically able to do the work on a home construction site?
A.     No problem. We’ll work with you to find the most suitable place to complete your “sweat equity” hours.

Q.   How much is the monthly house payment?
A.   That depends on the final cost of each home but our homeowners typically pay less than $500 per month.

Q.   Can I get a home right away?
1.  We build 1 or 2 homes during the warm summer months and they are typically finished by October.
2.  If one of our homeowners decides to sell their home back to us, we can have a home available at other times of the year.

Q.   Who will maintain and make repairs on my Habitat home?
A.   Like any other homeowner you will be responsible for taking care of your own home.
